POLIÇA and s t a r g a z e announce first of two collaborative records
TGNP (N. America) and Transgressive Records (World) have teamed up to co-release a new collaboration between POLIÇA and s t a r g a z e, a 12" vinyl record of their expansive, blistering approach to Steve Reich's minimalist composition "Music for Pieces of Wood".
Bruise Blood: Reimagining Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood is the first of two releases to come from Poliça and s t a r g a z e. Taking “Music For Pieces of Wood” as a basis and corrupting its polyrhythms across a continuous twenty minutes of music, this pushes the boundaries of both artists in a truly engrossing and transportative collaboration.
The release is a one-sided 12” vinyl record, with a decorative etching on side B, packed in an “old-style” tip-on jacket and black dust sleeve designed by Jake Luck.Preorder the 12" vinyl here.
s t a r g a z e is an ever-evolving project, marrying modern composition with alternative attitudes and sounds. The first official s t a r g a z e release was a pioneering re-interpretation of the music of the alternative experimentalists Deerhoof “Deerhoof Chamber Variations” which led to the fulsome, and controversial takeover of the BBC Proms for the David Bowie night, which saw s t a r g a z e collaborate with artists as diverse of John Cale, Elf Kid, Mark Almond and Anna Calvi amongst others to celebrate the astounding, at times contradictory, music of this soulful, inspirational polymath.
Poliça have themselves blazed a trail across the modern musical landscape – across their three albums of dark, personally political pop they have distorted the conventions of production and form to create deeply affecting songs that claw into your consciousness.
Alpha Consumer's Jeremy Ylvisaker to release two instrumental albums with TGNP
TGNP is thrilled to announce two instrumental albums from wizard guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Ylvisaker. Both records will be available June 15th, ahead of his performances as an artist-in-residence at this year's Eaux Claires Festival.
"Dimebag" is inspired by the story of Eddie Van Halen's guitar in Dimebag Darrell's coffin. It's a heavy and undertold story, like one people would make up while trying to understand constellations. The sword of the elder. Now, this music happens to not sound much like either of those musicians, rather it was written as a sort of abstract memorial service in 3 parts. The idea grew from there.
Recording began in January of 2007, and continued as ideas sprung up everywhere, preserved using what was at hand. 2 songs were written and recorded at Andrew Bird soundchecks. 2 were recorded by the late great Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen. One was a part of another recording that sounded good by itself. This record was as discovered as it was made. Time plays a role as 10 years passed while material slowly fell together.
"Malibu Hymnal", by contrast, was made in a few hours. Guitars, microphones, friends. That's what happened.Jeremy Ylvisaker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer who has played and recorded with Andrew Bird, members of Prince's New Power Generation, The Suburbs, Eyedea, Fog, Haley, Chuck Statler (maker of "The Truth About Devolution") Merce Cunningham dance company, and many others. He has performed on five continents in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Cape Town Jazz Festival, The Ed Sullivan Theater (The Late Show with David Letterman), and other television programs including Austin City Limits and the Colbert Report. He composes and improvises a variety of instrumental music, some of which to accompany dance performances such as "Stripe Tease", some of which for use in films such as "Pitchfork Unsung: Dan Corrigan", "Rhythmic" (feat. Andrew Bird), and "Trophy Husband." Some just for listening while you do what you do. Jeremy also writes songs for the band Alpha Consumer.
